Night
time bicycle safety
If
you enjoy night time bicycle riding, safety lights
will be something for you to consider. There are many new types of
bicycle safety lights offered today than ever before. Lighting your
way, not only in front of you, but to the sides is the safest way to
enjoy a bicycle ride at night. Purchasing a rechargeable lighting
system for your bicycle can be quite expensive.
The
price usually runs
over $100 for a simple bicycle lighting system. Making yourself visible
at night is very important. Most drivers of vehicles are not looking
for cyclists on the road, so lighting yourself up can help you stay
safe. The best safety lights to help you to be visible to traffic are
xenon strobes.
Choose
either a red or amber strobe for the back of your
bicycle and a clear strobe for the front. A low wattage headlight in
the front is what the law requires for safety. These xenon strobes are
also visible in daylight, making these safety lights a good choice.
There are many creative ways to
bring attention to your
self. Using white bicycles, reflective paint, neon orange or lime green
bikes glow in the dark and increase your chances of being seen by
motorists. Some bicyclists use a car light, since people are often
looking for car lights and not the small pinpoint lights of a
bicyclist. Other bicyclist uses safety lights on their helmets to
attract attention.
A beacon can be attached to your
helmet with velcro.
Currently their are new LED safety lights on the market. These large
LED flashers are designed to use as a highway safety light. The cost is
cheap for 18 extremely bright LED lights that are sure to draw
attention. Don't forget reflective tape on pedals, shoes, and clothing.
To view your path ahead, you will want at least a 10 watt
headlamp.
The
use of halogen lamps will light up your path even on the darkest
streets and roads. Take safety into mind when purchasing your lighting
system. Small flashing lights may look cute but will not provide the
safety you need while riding your bicycle in the night.
